The 2025/26 season in the Syrena Theatre will open with the premiere of the musical “Beetlejuice” directed by Jacek Mikołajczyk. Today we announce the cast and begin ticket sale for the premiere set in September 2025.
The musical “Beetlejuice” is based on Tim Burton’s cult film from 1988 starring Micheal Keaton. It tells the story of Mr. and Ms. Maitland who died in a car crash but came back as ghosts. And they’re not intent on moving out of their home, even though it now belongs to a new family. They try to get rid of them with the help of Beetlejuice, an eccentric ghost who in turn has his own plans. The artists responsible for the theatre adaptation, Scott Brown and Anthony King, as well as composer and songwriter Eddie Perfect, were able to perfectly translate to the stage the weirdness and comic horror of Burton’s film. But “Beetlejuice” is not only a sentimental journey back to the fantastical cinema of the 1980s and 90s, but also a moving portrayal of a lost teenage girl who is coming to grips with the loss of her mother. The original American production was nominated for eight Tony awards – the theatrical equivalent of the Academy Award.
– We completed another successful audition – states Monika Walecka, Syrena’s director. – It was successful because we got to discover many new actors. Our audiences will also get a chance to discover them in just a few months, since the cast will consist of eight actors for whom “Beetlejuice” will be their debut on our stage. This includes even… Beetlejuice himself, that is, the actor playing him – Marcin “Sosna” Sosiński, who usually works in the Music Theatre in Łódź, but who stole our hearts in the auditions. The previous casting we organized was for the high school musical “Heathers”, where we invited as many as thirteen newcomers to join the Syrena Theatre. The “new blood” performed exceptionally well on stage, and we’re confident it will be the same this time around.
The eight actors selected from the auditions who will be debuting in Syrena are: Marcin „Sosna” Sosiński, Aleksandra Rowicka, Julia Totoszko, Żaneta Rus, Katarzyna Miednik, Krzysztof Dzwoniarski, Łukasz Kamiński and Marcel Zawadzki.
– Year after year, we’ve seen an increasingly high standard at auditions for musicals staged at Syrena. This time, the bar was set particularly high, as we were looking for actors not only with the versatile skills that musical theatre demands but also with great charisma – performers who are capable of carrying a production based on such an iconic film – adds Jacek Mikołajczyk, the artistic director as well as translator and director of “Beetlejuice”.
So what can we expect from the cast?
– We’re in for an acting showdown between Przemysław Glapiński and Marcin “Sosna” Sosiński in the role of Beetlejuice, along with a lineup of strong female characters: Delia, played by Małgorzata Chruściel and Anna Terpiłowska; Barbara, portrayed by Małgorzata Majerska and Agnieszka Rose; and Miss Argentina, brought to life by Aleksandra Gotowicka and Żaneta Rus, a newcomer to Syrena. I’m especially thrilled that we were able to cast Julia Totoszko and Aleksandra Rowicka as Lydia, the teenage character. This was the biggest challenge of the audition – to find two Polish musical incarnations of Winona Ryder. And we did – shares Jacek Mikołajczyk.
The show is being coproduced by the Syrena Theatre (premiere in Warsaw in September 2025) and Teatr Rozrywki in Chorzów (premiere in Chorzów early spring 2026). The Warsaw cast was selected from an audition with a record-breaking 480 actors and actresses applying – an all-time high for the Syrena Theatre. The Chorzów cast has not yet been announced.
Tickets are available for the premiere set of “Beetlejuice” in Syrena, which will last until September 28, 2025. Tickets can be bought here.
