The legendary mayor of Warsaw, Stefan Starzyński – symbol of the capital’s resistance in September 1939 – is the protagonist of the latest original musical premiere at the Syrena Theatre. The production is based on the biography “Starzyński. Prezydent z pomnika” written by Grzegorz Piątek, published by W.A.B.
The stage adaptation and direction are by Konrad Imiela, director of the Capitol Musical Theatre in Wrocław and a renowned musical director. The composer is Grzegorz Rdzak. The duo has a strong feel for the interwar atmosphere, as proven by their Capitol production of “Mock. Czarna burleska”, based on the crime novels of Marek Krajewski.
The musical about the mayor of Warsaw will not be a classic biography tracing the hero’s life from childhood to death. As Konrad Imiela explains, he is particularly interested in the final period of Stefan Starzyński’s life and work as Warsaw’s mayor. It will be a story about how history and circumstances can force us into becoming heroes, even if we never saw ourselves in that role.
