They’ve been dubbed “the worst family in America”. Who? The owners of a pharmaceutical company that brought a “miracle” painkiller to the U.S. market – a drug that turned out to be opium in pill form. So addictive was it that many patients eventually turned to street drugs like heroin. The opioid epidemic has since claimed over half a million American lives. The producers of the drug made billions off of their victims. As part of a legal settlement, they paid a fine smaller than their profit, effectively securing their own impunity in the process. This story happened for real and transformed America into a country on drugs.
