Our newest production is an adaptation of the novel “Wypiór” by Grzegorz Uzdański about relationship problems of 30 year-olds living in the capital and the national bard who became… a vampire. Directed by Jacek Jabrzyk, the play will premiere on February 3. Tickets are already available for purchase.
Marta and Łukasz, a couple experiencing a crisis in their relationship, lives in a quiet apartment on Plac Zbawiciela. Their predicament is made even worse by their roommate who chose their closet for his final resting place. And it’s no one other than Adam Mickiewicz, now existing as a vampire! Blood thirsty, he wanders at night through Nowy Świat and hides among the bushes in Pola Mokotowskie…
This is the beginning of the story created by Grzegorz Uzdański. The writer become famous as a “literary ventriloquist”, successfully imitating the literary styles of renowned authors, e.g. on the Facebook page „Nowe wiersze sławnych poetów” (“New poems of famous poets”). That’s why “Wypiór” was written mostly in Polish alexandrine, typical of Mickiewicz’s work. The novel was adapted and directed by Jacek Jabrzyk.
In my imagiation, Grzegorz Uzdański’s poem transforms into a theatrical collage. Different threads, associations, sounds and images together form a romantic story with a criminal undertone. The story, spiced up with absurd humour, is immersed in the atmosphere of horror. The play will be an original journey around contemporary Warsaw. In addition to the pair of protagonists and the titular Wypiór, the stage will be filled out by a procession of surprising characters talking, singing and dancing. Music will be one of the heroes of our show.

The play will star Przemysław Glapiński and Natalia Kujawa – who have just received the Jan Kiepura Music Theatre awards for best musical vocalists in Poland! – as well as Marek Grabiniok, Agnieszka Rose and Jacek Pluta. Although will mark the first time Jacek Jabrzyński has directed a play for the Syrena Theatre, the music is written by Mariusz Obrański returning to our theatre after having composed the musical “Kapitan Żbik i żółty saturator”.
The music in “Wypiór” will have several functions. Sometimes it will act like an additional actor, adding something that cannot be expressed in words; sometimes it will make us travel to specific places and times, adding to the set design; and sometimes it will be simply background. We’ll be moving fluently between rap, pop songs, music inspred by classic songs. The sound is going to be eclectic, inspired by electronic music, but also connecting seemingly disparate musical worlds. There will be lots of movie references and catchy songs.

“Wypiór” will be performed in the space of the Bistro Syrena, where we previously showed the underground revue “Nogi Syreny”.
Tickets for the shows planned from February 3 to 11 and from March 21 to 24 are now on sale on our website: bilety.teatrsyrena.pl.
